NEW ARTIST & TRACK: Fat Tony “Hood Party” With SXSW Shows.

Fat Tony is a Houston based Nigerian-American rap artist known for his wordly, literate, and fun songwriting, as well as his energetic live performances. Winner of the 2010, 2009, & 2008 Houston Press Music Awards’ “Best Underground Hip Hop” award, he’s also known to be a bit of a critical darling. His most recent album and mixtape to date, RABDARGAB and Double Dragon, respectively, were produced entirely by Tom Cruz (Supreeme, Cen’c Love) and feature MURS, Bun B and Main Attrakionz, to name a few. His accessible nature has brought forth collaborations with unexpected artists such as Nick Diamonds (Islands/Mister Heavenly/The Unicorns), OG Ron C, B L A C K I E, Juiceboxxx and more.
Following last summer’s release of Double Dragon, Tony is back today to announce his debut album for Young One Records, due June 11th, along with its first official single. Smart Ass Black Boy sees Tony perfecting the formula he’s been refining over the past couple years, pairing the influence of Houston’s Screw music with the quirkiness of more contemporary artists like Young One labelmates Main Attrakionz. Speaking on the new record, Tony says:
“Me and producer Tom Cruz put our all into this one. We set out to make an album, not just a bunch of aimless rapping and it shows. I’ve been making music since I was a lil teen, learning a lot and becoming a better artist every step of the way. Smart Ass Black Boy is the bridge from my adolescence to who I am now as a man. I touch on gentrification, race relations, romance, growing up a first generation Nigerian-American, and more all while having a hell of a good time. Step into the mind of a young rap god on the rise straight out of 3rd Ward, Check out first single “Hood Party,” which features Kool AD (of the late Das Racist) and under-rated NYC MC Despot linking up with Tony and producer Tom Cruz for a house party thumper. Check out the track below.

Following two critically acclaimed albums, Iceland’s Ólöf Arnalds releases her new album,Sudden Elevation, today via One Little Indian Records. Comprised of twelve self-penned tracks sung in English, the album finds Ólöf inhabiting a drier, more stripped-back sound than in previous releases, accompanied by acoustic guitar, charango, and subtle but luminous coloring from koto harp, keyboards and electric guitar, all played by Ólöf herself. Sudden Elevation is now available via iTunes and other digital retailers.
To celebrate the release, Ólöf has shared album track “Return Again,” a melancholic tune featuring the singer’s striking and highly poignant vocals floating above beautifully-arranged instrumentation that sets a tone of longing.
Produced by Skúli Sverrisson, Sudden Elevation was largely recorded in a two-week, partially snowed-in autumn 2011 stint in a seaside cabin in Hvalfjörður (literally ‘Whale-fjord’) in the west of Iceland. The album was then overdubbed and mixed both at Ólöf’s house in Reykjavík and at Sigur Rós’s Sundlaugin (Swimming Pool) studio at Álafoss. The record contains cameos from Ólöf’s two sisters: Klara Arnalds duets sunnily on “Bright and Still” and “Numbers and Names,” while Dagný Arnalds essays the devastating piano part in “Return Again.” Producer Skúli Sverrisson plays bass and electric guitar (including a high-pitched octave 12-string Shorty instrument) on several tracks, while Magnús Trygvason Eliassen adds gossamer drum parts to “German Fields” and “A Little Grim.”
Ólöf has performed alongside artists such as Dirty Projectors, Blonde Redhead, John Vanderslice and Björk (sometime collaborator), who once described Ólöf’s uniquely compelling vocal sound as “somewhere between a child and an old woman.” Stay tuned for more on Ólöf, and be sure to grab a copy of Sudden Elevation!
NEW TRACK & ALBUM PREVIEW: Wampire “Spirit Forest” Off Album Curiosity, Due Out May 14th Via Polyvinyl . SXSW Shows & Tour

Following the release of first album single “The Hearse”, Wampire are back to share the funky “Spirit Forest” from their forthcoming debut Curiosity. Where “The Hearse” was all manic organ-driven pop, “Spirit Forest” finds the band locking into a more laid-back groove, showing an entirely different side of the band’s sound. Check it out along with first single “The Hearse” above and be sure to catch Wampire on tour with Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Foxygen or at SXSW (all dates below).
After forming Wampire, Rocky Tinder and Eric Phipps steadily began to make a name for themselves in the same Portland, OR, scene that has produced labelmates STRFKR as well as Unknown Mortal Orchestra. It makes sense, then, that Wampire came to Polyvinyl’s attention when the duo opened for STRFKR at a hometown Portland show and that UMO’s bassist Jacob Portrait produced Wampire’s debut full-length, Curiosity.
The choice of Portrait was a natural one, with both Tinder and Phipps believing he’d be able to contribute almost as much to the record as they would. And so, in mid-August Tinder and Phipps each brought fragments of song ideas into the studio, before deconstructing, re-arranging, and fitting them back together piece by piece — at times lyrics and melodies were thrown out, brought back from the dead, or improvised on the spot.
This loosely structured approach made the process truly collaborative, with producer Portrait occasionally chipping in ideas for lyrics, arrangements, and instrumentation. The resulting nine tracks are instantly memorable, while defying easy categorization. Says Phipps, “We realized the record began to stray away from having a ‘sound’ and gradually became a platter with an assortment of sounds. The record showcases a flavor we haven’t quite dug into before.”
The album’s diverse combination of sounds ultimately helped give birth to its title, Curiosity — a word that invokes the listener’s wonder at what will greet their ears next, while also describing the overall curious tone the record possesses.
First single, “The Hearse” serves as the perfect introduction for those unfamiliar with the band — its opening notes swelling instantly with electronic organs over a driving drum beat. By the time bass and vocals kick in, you’re already hooked. Elsewhere, “Orchards” weaves an infectiously breezy melody on the strength of vocal harmonizing, tuneful whistling, and undulating guitar lines. In some cases, Wampire’s unique rhythms are best described by the band members, as with “Trains,” a Motown-meets-Strokes track that Tinder perfectly summarizes like so: “It’s sexy, sounds huge, and by all means should be blamed for future babies.”
The album concludes with the equally sensual “Magic Light,” a song centered around a dark seductive bass groove that sets the tone for Tinder’s come-hither lyrics. It’s the kind of track that draws you ever further into the record’s beguiling clutches, leaving a lasting impression that remains well after its final notes have faded out.

VIDEO POP: Buke And Gase “General Dome”
“I carry a crest of weight, chest dense with general doom. I awoke to find this as my vital state” begins Arone Dyer in “General Dome,” the title track off Buke and Gase‘s tremendous new album. Released earlier this year to critical acclaim from NPR Music, The Wall Street Journal, Interview Magazine, AV Club, and Pitchfork, the album boasts a strong collection of genre-defying compositions. Director J.D. Molero portrays the title track’s sense of foreboding perfectly by manipulating and digitally distorting his 16mm footage into something truly unsettling. Watch the video.
SEISMIC NEWS: Brent Amaker Signs To Fin Records “Last Year Of The Dragon” Out June 4th

Seattle record label Fin Records have announced the signing of Brent Amaker and The Rodeo to their roster, as well as their upcoming full length Year of The Dragon, slated for release June 4th. Their fourth full length record, Year of the Dragon will be released on vinyl, cd, and digital download. Full album details, including the artwork, track list, and first single, will be announced soon.
When asked for a note on the upcoming Year Of The Dragon, Fin Records owner Christian Fulghum expressed his enthusiasm by stating, “Working with Brent Amaker and The Rodeo is fun because they are taking all-American Cowboy iconography and cross-breeding it with Krautrock and the Boys from Akron. The songwriting is by turns sly, funny, and subversive. My kind of music.”
Mr. Amaker noted, “This latest LP may just expand your perception of American Western music. We’ve been on a strange and wonderful trip these past several years and the new songs reflect that. Year of the Dragon is darker than previous stuff and more fully expresses where the band is going. And on top of that, I couldn’t be happier to be releasing the next Rodeo LP under the Fin Records imprint. They produce a high quality product and they keep the focus on the artist. It’s truly exciting to be part of their family. Now saddle up and get yourself ready!”
Fin Records is an up and coming label that has already given homes to a wide swath of acts ranging across a vareity of genres, from Hip Hop to Noise, to Country, and then some. Recently named “Local Record Label of The Year 2012′ by the Seattle Weekly, the two year old label has recently released acclaimed works from the likes of J. Pinder, The Walkabouts, Red Jacket Mine, Long Distance Poison, Davidson Hart Kingsbery and many more.
Brent Amaker and the Rodeo will be playing in Olympia, WA next Friday, 3/8. at the Royal Lounge, and touring through out 2013. Stay tuned. (Official announcement)

NEW TRACK: “Gravediggress” By Coco Rosie
In their ten years as CocoRosie, the sisters have released four albums: Grey Oceans (2010), The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn (2007), Noah’s Ark (2005), and their first album La Maison De Mon Rêve (2004) – each inspiring equal amounts of controversy, debate and praise.
With a strong creative vision running through every aspect of their work, CocoRosie are regarded not only for their music but also for their additional artistic endeavors, which is paramount to the sisters and often becomes a source of inspiration for their songwriting. In addition to hosting informal fashion shows, artist salons and poetry readings, Sierra has arranged and performed operas in Sydney, Amsterdam and London, while Bianca has exhibited her visual art around the world. This spring, the duo will unveil their collaborative efforts on a production of “Peter Pan,” commissioned by the Berliner Ensemble along with theatre director Robert Wilson. Later this year, Bianca will launch “Girls Against God,” an arts and letters print publication that keeps in line with the sisters’ personal feminist mission.
In addition to all of this, CocoRosie will be touring extensively around the world in 2013. For now, however, we leave you with Tales of a GrassWidow, their fifth musical offering, which showcases the sisters at their most inspired, creative and fearless.
NEW TRACK: “Oceans With No End” By Cold Cave
Cold Cave is the creative rebirth of acclaimed musician and writer Wesley Eisold.NEW TRACK: “Girls” By French Horn Rebllion ft. JD Sampson & Fat Tony

French Horn Rebellion collaborated with The Knocks’ JPatt for this nu disco track “Love Is Dangerous”. The remix by Brooklyn’s Chrome Canyon is part of the Love Is Dangerous EP. Last month, the French Horn Rebellion-brothers released their Poster Girl EP with praise from Rolling Stone and Jay Z for their tracks, and supported OF MONTREALon their American tour.
Written, produced and mixed by brothers Robert and David Perlick-Molinari, released their debut album The Infinite Music…which warps the fabric of dance, electro, rock and funk and was possibly last year’s most ambitious, multi-faceted and engaging debut album. Crucially, the album also follows an intergalactic narrative that tracks the physical and emotional journey of an unknown French horn player, with a story that loops into itself – being infinite. “The album is basically the result of countless hours in the pit orchestra of operas, and thinking how fun it would be to score something like that, only with hot beats,” says Robert. The band have also remixed the likes of Sleigh Bells, MEN, Two Door Cinema Club, OMD, Savoir Adore and Alex Winston.

Pickathon 2013 Line-up Announcment. August 2nd-4th.

Pickathon is turning 15 and, like a fine wine, it just keeps getting better! Happening Friday, August 2nd – Sunday, August 4th at Pendarvis Farm in Happy Valley, OR (a mere 15 minutes from downtown Portland), this year promises to be the best ever. Since day one, the idea behind Pickathon has always been pretty simple: what does it take to be the best weekend festival of the year for music lovers? This question has driven Pickathon to highly refine an experience that has few peers.
Innovation has always been at the center of this process and through the years many important elements have come together; collaborating widely on yearly diverse lineups that are built on the idea of great music being the sole criteria; refining six unique performance venues designed to create juxtaposing alternate realities; trusting important decisions can be discussed and made with our online community such as maintaining a low crowd density; becoming the only large music festival to eliminate plastic and minimize single use items; recruiting the finest food and drink purveyors in the land; focusing constantly on eliminating “normal” festival hassles, and the list goes on.
This year’s lineup is truly a high point in Pickathon’s existence. We are pleased to welcomeFeist, Andrew Bird, Divine Fits, Sharon Van Etten, The Devil Makes Three, Kurt Vile & The Violators, Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside, Vieux Farka Touré, Howe Gelb, Lady, Shabazz Palaces, The Felice Brothers, Tift Merritt, Wayne Hancock, Marco Benevento,The Lone Bellow, Dale Watson, Foxygen, Parquet Courts, Breathe Owl Breathe, White Fence, Yellowbirds, and so much more! The full lineup is below (though there might be a few surprises along the way, so stay tuned). Also, remember, each band is at the festival for two days, playing two sets on two of six very unique stages! Where else can you see a band play an outdoor festival set in front of thousands and the next night, witness the same band in a sweaty and rollicking rock club environment? Only at Pickathon! Seismic Preview: Grave Babies New Album “Crusher” Due Out Feb.26th On Hardly Art Records.
There’s a psychiatric disorder called a mixed state. It’s when a person displays both manic and melancholy impulses at the same time. This is often considered a dangerous point on the spectrum of mental illness, as the contradictory moods don’t cancel each other out or land you safely in the middle. Instead, these extreme moods join forces, enhancing the darker traits of each.
If you invert this tendency, remove it from the realm of disorder, and instead, celebrate its possibilities, consider it as a goal, you’ll understand Grave Babies—a band whose sound might suggest the need for drugs that stabilize mood, while creating, at the same time, a desire for ones that enhance them. Who doesn’t want a big sound to sound bigger, a mood to be moodier, and, on occasion, pain to feel more painful? Not to say that Grave Babies are mopes, or their music depressing or affected. Gothic, dark, spooky, post-punk: Toss out the adjectival assault currently heaped upon bands with any hint of feedback, somber lyrics, and the occasional gory metaphor. A band like Grave Babies is best served by seeking out the sounds below the obvious. Danny Wahlfeldt, the band’s founder, claims zero allegiance to the gloomy canon to which his music is often compared, owing more of a debt to ‘90s giants Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails. And despite Grave Babies’ fuzz and muffle, its near-metal moments, one senses a trace of a cleaner brand of pop—a flowery, even happy pop music—scraping along the sides of their songs. On many tracks—even some of the heaviest—there’s some jangle in the jugular and that’s where much of the tension lies, where the songs are at their most surprising and evocative. At the center of Grave Babies’ sound is the sonic equivalent of thwarted desire—or, as they put it themselves: horrible things wrapped in hope.
Rock music, even the most up-tempo song, always has this element of longing. Some bands, Grave Babies among them, play a little closer to the pain of it all. But the satisfaction in listening to Grave Babies comes, again, from its contrasting elements, its effortless mixing of opposites and tracing of fine lines: sincerity that doesn’t bend towards the sentimental; distortion that serves the melody, rather than obscures it; aggression that belies desire, not destruction; and destruction that wends its way back into the messy spirit of contradiction and controlled chaos. All this delivered with a deadpan wit that somehow sidesteps humor without being humorless.
Crusher (February 2013) is Grave Babies’ latest release on Seattle label Hardly Art. It follows a 7” (“Pleasures”) and a 12” EP (Gothdammit). This is their second full-length LP. (The first, Deathface, was a cassette-to-vinyl re-release on Danish label Skrot Up.) The title itself—Crusher—is the prefect preface for an album that continues to deliver the bold, heavy, driven, off-pop pop the band is known for, while at the same time, annihilating its former catalogue in a curious way. Many bands mark their evolution with a departure. On Crusher, Grave Babies take what is arguably the harder approach: doing what they’ve always done, but doing it better. Wahlfeldt still does the writing and recording on his own, but credits his current bandmates as having a tremendous impact, both musically and thematically, on the final product. These rogue influences serve the album well. On Crusher, Grave Babies’ method may be the same, but their madness is multiplied.
The Chicago-based electro-pop group Psychic Twin premiere their new single “Strangers” … and Polyvinyl Records will release the Strangers 7″ digitally on March 5, and on limited-edition vinyl April 2.
Two and a half years ago, Erin Fein began to pen a series of songs that would become the music of Psychic Twin. These songs emerged as intensely personal, nervously rhythmic, and indebted to the ’80s new-wave of her youth. While recording by herself, doubling her vocals and singing ghostly counter-melodies, she was overcome with the surreal but persistent feeling that she was writing and recording with her twin. “In an ideal situation,” she says, “there would have been two of me singing and playing the music.”
Rather than a musical clone, Brett Sanderson provides a fluid backdrop, joining Fein’s new material with propulsive electronica and a shimmering synth-rock atmosphere. Lush synthesizer washes and incisive keyboard lines fade in and out over subtly persistent beats that begin simply, but reveal their complexity as songs take shape. The music is anchored by the bright melodicism inherent in Fein’s songwriting, as verses and choruses shift and expand over the course of a song. Psychic Twin makes pop music that is romantic and mysterious; infused with an ineffable longing for escape, for the unattainable, like the impossible desire to make music with one’s own double.
In the summer of 2012, drummer Jonny ‘Magic’ Sommer joined Psychic Twin.
